Courier Fraud Warning - Cheltenham, Gloucester, & Cirencester being targeted

Courier Fraud Warning - Cheltenham, Gloucester, & Cirencester being targeted

The above areas are being targeted by telephone fraudsters purporting to be the police. We have had a number of incidents reported this week by residents of Cheltenham, Cirencester, and Gloucester.  On each occasion the fraudster claimed to be a police officer.

Different names and police forces were used in each case, however all the calls stated that someone had paid counterfeit cash into the victim’s bank account, and the police needed the victim to withdraw cash at their local branch.  The victims were told they would need to then hand the cash over to a “police officer” who would visit them to collect it. One of the intended victims was 87 years old and withdrew £3,000.00

During the fraud, the victim is instructed to "hang up" the phone and dial 999 or 101 to confirm the call is genuine. However, when the victim puts the phone down and re-dials, the call is not disconnected and the fraudster has remained on the line.

The average victim of courier fraud in Gloucestershire is 78 years old and will lose £9,400.00

Please help us raise awareness of this scam by informing your elderly or vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours.
